Following our successful Action Indonesia Day in 2019, we continue to run this campaign day again in 2020. We believe that this global collaborative campaign day brings powerful momentum to raise awareness for Action Indonesia GSMP species: anoa, banteng, babirusa, and Sumatran tiger.

Action Indonesia Day 2020 was celebrated on 16th August. This date was agreed considering weekend date and around Indonesia Independence Day so it can give more messages and spirit for public to join and spread our conservation message to protect Indonesian wildlife. We also used this day not only to raise awareness of 4 species above, but we did also for all Indonesian wildlife that need more attention from public to protect and support any conservation efforts.

During our preparation for this day, we faced a tough and difficult situation globally due to Covid-19 pandemic all around the world. This pandemic has affected all zoos and most of them closed their operational for public for certain months. Many activities and program at the zoos were postponed and need to be adapted to resolve this situation. Some education programs at the zoos also adapted. They used many platforms to keep engagements to the public, telling everyone about their animals virtually, and other creative activities that never run before. We found this could run well, enable people to engage more closely with the zoos and their animals. This virtual activity has allowed more people to “visit” and get to know their animals, as well as allowing the zoos to spread the conservation messages to broader audience.

Following some considerations above, we kept going with our planned acitivities for Action Indonesia Day 2020. As most zoos were not possible to do on-site education activity, we encouraged them to do more education activity virtually.

We are very grateful that we have 14 Indonesian zoos joining Action Indonesia Day 2020: Siantar Zoo and R Zoo & Park in North Sumatera, Taman Safari Indonesia Bogor & Bandung Zoological Garden in West Java, Ragunan Zoo, Reptile Park TMII, Bird Park TMII, Aquarium & Insect TMII in Jakarta, Jurug Solo Zoo and Gembira Loka Zoo in Central Java and Yogyakarta, Surabaya Zoo and Taman Safari Indonesia Prigen in East Java, Bali Safari Park and Bali Zoo in Bali.

Most of them did an Instagram Live about their animals, introducing the collection they had, individual story of the animals, and also what people can do to help them. Some zoos developed education video also such as Surabaya Zoo, Gembira Loka Zoo, and Bali Zoo that they posted on their social media on 16th August. Some zoos that already reopened also conducted some small on-site activity, like Solo Zoo that asked visitors to write their wish for wildlife conservation in Indonesia, build a photobooth in Surabaya Zoo, Taman Safari Indonesia Prigen, and Bandung Zoological Garden. Siantar Zoo and R Zoo & Park held up a prized video contest about Indonesian endemic species. This got very positive response, many participants join this contest and it allowed more people to learn more about Indonesian wildlife and their population status. Also, all of the zoos posted their creative animal facts, conservation messages, and other news in their social media. We used hashtag #ActionIndonesiaDay and #ActionIndonesia to reach more people.

This difficult situation will not stop us to share our education conservation messages to public. Even this situation allows us to be creative and reach more people through our activities. Happy Action Indonesia Day!
