PKBSI-GSMP Zoo Visit

The PKBSI and Global Species Management Plan (GSMP) team conducted the zoo visits to 12 zoos in Indonesia, on the March 9th - 15th, 2020. This was a follow up visit from the PKBSI-GSMP collaborative conservation program for 4 species (anoa, banteng, babirusa & Sumatran tiger) to achieve a genetically and demographically healthy population.

Those 12 zoos were : Taman Margasatwa Ragunan, Taman Safari Indonesia-Bogor, Taman Satwa Cikembulan-Garut, Bandung Zoological Garden, Kebun Binatang Surabaya, Maharani Zoo-Lamongan, Batu Secret Zoo-Jatim Park, Taman Safari Indonesia-Prigen, Taman Satwa Taru Jurug-Surakarta, R Zoo & Park Medan, Taman Hewan Pematang Siantar & Medan Zoo.

The team was led by Tony Sumampau as the PKBSI Secretary General, along with : Prof. Dr. Gono Semiadi (Chair, Organisation, Law, Membership, and Research PKBSI), Dr. James Burton (Chair, IUCN-SSC AWCSG), Joseph Forys (Curator, Audubon Zoo, US), and Corinne Bailey (AWCSG Programme Officer, Chester Zoo). Apart from this team, the representatives of each KSDA office also attended the visit in each zoo as the support from the government.

During the visit, we discussed the progress of the 2nd PKBSI-GSMP Breeding and Transfer Recommendation, as well as the genetic research plan for the GSMP species that the samples would be taken from certain zoos in Indonesia. All zoos were also requested to start planning their collection plan for the GSMP species that will be discussed during the 3rd GSMP workshop in 2021. All the team also provided support and input for the husbandry and the management of the zoos for the improvement in the future following the Five Domain of Animal Welfare.
